Why Maternal Health?
The United States has the highest rates of maternal mortality and morbidity among all developed countries. In 2020, the maternal mortality rate in the United States was 23.8 per 100,000 live births1 and an estimated 50,000-60,000 pregnant people experienced severe maternal morbidity. 2 Within the United States, there are significant disparities in maternal health outcomes. Non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native, and rural populations have significantly higher rates of maternal mortality and morbidity, which have been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 public health emergency.
