Workplace Breastfeeding Rights During Covid-19

Are you a nursing parent worried about expressing breast milk at work during the Covid-19 Pandemic?

Having this fear is completely normal. Just know that you have the right to safely express milk at work under the Break Time for Nursing Mothers Law or similar state laws, depending on where you live.

Although, there is a Pandemic going on, your rights have not changed. During the pandemic, it is required by law for employers to ensure a safe designated pumping space for all nursing parents.

When communicating with your employer, here are a few precautions to consider:

  1. Make sure your employer has access to clean surfaces with soap and can provide disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer.
  2. Consider ways to purifying the air for example, one can set up an outdoor space that has shields with a view, open windows, or use high efficiency particulate air filters.
  3. For areas where multi- user spaces are located: install Plexiglas or walls, enforce social distancing and wearing masks.
