Maternal Monologues Toolkit

Maternal Monologues for Community Conversations and Action

Maternal Monologues are community presentations of stories by women/birthing persons, their partners, and supporters along the journey of birthing and maternal health. These stories are based on real experiences, and designed to serve as a tool for communities to tell their own stories for healing, raising awareness, and mobilizing for change.

Maternal Monologues at Xavier University of Louisiana

NHSA AIM CCI in partnership with Xavier University of Louisiana hosted “Maternal Monologues” as a kick-off event for Black Maternal Health Week on April 11th in New Orleans. The event was co-sponsored by Xavier University’s Department of Public Health Sciences and their Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities. The event featured monologues shared by mothers from the Xavier community as well as the greater New Orleans community, bringing attention to both the challenges and joys experienced by Black mothers and birthing people. Dr. Veronica Gillispie-Bell, Medical Director of the Louisiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative and Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review pre-recorded a video address highlighting the known research and statistics regarding the unique risks for Black mothers and birthing persons.

The event was successful in bringing the campus community and New Orleans community together to raise awareness of the local maternal health crisis, discuss potential solutions and opportunities for collaboration, and plan for continued action.
